Mohegan Casino Renovating and Expanding Connecticut Resort

Mohegan Sun, the owner and operator of a tribal casino resort in Uncasville, Connecticut, is investing $15 million to modernize and expand with the main targets of the upgrade being the VIP customers and high rollers. Big spenders are among the most lucrative revenue streams for the gaming industry which makes this move very strategic.

The refurbishment features a new 6,500-square-foot VIP Lounge & Bar within Casino of the Earth, according to a spokesperson for the Mohegan Tribe. The resort’s two most opulent guestrooms, named The Royal Suites, will also be completely renovated and so will the Sachem Lounge at Casino of the Sky. But that is not all.

The Mohegan Sun Golf Club in Baltic, Connecticut, is set to receive $1 million that will be channeled towards new maintenance equipment. In addition to that, the golf club has devised a three-year master plan to rebuild and remodel some areas of the course thus making it even more appealing to their premium clientele. The first phase, which is now ongoing, entails the removal and replacement of trees as well as the total removal of specific bunkers.

“Our premium customers have always been an important part of our business. We think our high-end amenities give us a competitive advantage.”

Jeff Hamilton, Mohegan Sun’s president, and general manager.

This year and in 2023, enhancements will be made to the partially-covered terrace outside Mohegan Sun’s Summer Entrance. Aside from what is already being worked on a permanent outside bar, a deck, a music stage, and a revamped recreational area are among the proposed modifications. Work on these will likely start much later.

Preparing for Even More Market Growth

Connecticut’s long-awaited legalized sports betting and internet gambling were inaugurated late last year, bringing in tens of millions of dollars for the state. The biggest beneficiaries were the two tribal-owned casinos which include Mohegan Sun’s operation, and the Connecticut Lottery Corp. With the planned renovations, it is clear that there is still a huge market for the land-based gambling and entertainment experience.

Foxwoods Resorts Casino, which is Mohegan Sun’s key rival in Connecticut is also very keen on upgrading and attracting more customers. The operator has also recently revealed 30th-anniversary expansion plans. This will feature the introduction of CardVault, a first-of-its-kind retail experience built for buying, selling, trading, grading, and consigning sports cards, and memorabilia, as well as a new VIP Players’ Lounge in the old Veranda Café among other things.
